Cryptocurrencies
How we assess each coin
HaramCoins exists to answer one question honestly: is a given cryptocurrency permissible under Islamic finance, or not? We do not issue fatwas, and we do not pretend the scholars all agree. Instead we examine every coin against the same four principles, and we show our reasoning so you can judge for yourself.
- Riba (interest), does the coin pay or charge a guaranteed return, as lending tokens do?
- Gharar (excessive uncertainty), is the project opaque, or its value impossible to reason about?
- Maysir (gambling), does profit depend purely on speculation with nothing of value behind it?
- Underlying activity, does the network mainly serve something lawful, or something forbidden?
Each coin is then placed in one of three honest categories. Permissible-leaning means it avoids the major concerns. Scholars differ means respected scholars reach opposite conclusions, as with Bitcoin. Concerns means it carries a clear problem such as interest or gambling. Read the specific coin page for the detailed reasoning, and start with our guide on what makes a cryptocurrency halal.
This site is educational and is not a fatwa or financial advice. Rulings can change as a project changes, so confirm any decision with a qualified scholar and do your own research.
Every ruling here comes from qualified scholars
We document the project
Our researchers set out exactly how a project generates value, what a holder actually owns, how it earns, and where any yield comes from. Mechanism first, marketing never.
Our scholars assess it
That documentation goes to the scholars we retain. They apply the established principles of fiqh al muamalat to the specific mechanism in front of them, and they issue the assessment.
We publish their conclusion
We publish the ruling with the reasoning that produced it, so a reader can follow the argument rather than simply accept a verdict. Where scholars differ, we say so.

A contribution, in whatever amount you see fit
Scholarly review is the most demanding part of what we do, and we pay for it. Every project assessed means hours of study by qualified people. If this work has been useful to you and you wish to help it continue, you are welcome to contribute. There is no obligation, no tier, and nothing is withheld from anyone who does not.

Please check the address carefully before you send anything. It begins 6vdFAe and ends N9GBvL. Transfers on Solana cannot be reversed. Send only SOL on the Solana network. We will never contact you first to ask for a contribution, and we will never ask you for a seed phrase or a private key.
Contributions support research costs only. They buy no influence over any assessment, they are never accepted from a project we rule on, and they never change a ruling. A contribution is a gift, not a payment for a service, and it is not tax deductible.
