Definitive falls under “Exchange token”. The assessment below weighs its real use against the core prohibitions of riba, gharar and maysir.

01What it is

Definitive is an onchain trade execution platform and EDGE is its token on the Base network. The platform routes spot trades across more than 200 exchanges and liquidity pools to seek the best price, and offers advanced order types that are rare onchain: limit, stop, take profit and time weighted average price orders, on web and mobile, with institutional features such as sub accounts and post trade reports. EDGE has two live uses: staking it reduces trading fees, and since late 2025 the platform has used 20 percent of its revenue for weekly token buybacks, half directed at reducing circulating supply and half redistributed as staking rewards, with the rewards paid from revenue rather than new issuance. The total supply is 1,000,000,000 and about 264 million circulate today; the rest is held by the team, investors and the treasury under vesting, and 49 percent of the supply was set aside for the community, including an initial distribution to more than 124,000 wallets. Eight security audits have been published, the latest covering the token itself. The contract is an upgradeable proxy and it includes an owner controlled mint function, with ownership held by an administrative multisig.

02Why this assessment

The service at the core, spot trade execution and routing, is permissible in itself, and nothing in the token pays or charges interest: staking yields a fee discount and the reward pool is funded by platform revenue, not by lending and not by fresh issuance. That keeps riba and the usual emission schemes out of the picture, and the buyback and reward records are checkable on chain. Two features still keep this from a clear ruling. First, the token contract is deliberately changeable: it is an upgradeable proxy with an owner controlled mint, so the rules can be altered by an administrative decision, which is the kind of open ended uncertainty that weighs on a token's assessment. Second, on the same platform the team runs a perpetual futures section with leverage powered by Hyperliquid; leveraged futures are a product many scholars judge impermissible, and while it is separable from spot trading, a user is one menu away from it. Add a market where most trading is speculative, and the result is that scholars differ.

03The Islamic-finance lens

Nothing in the instrument itself touches the clearest objections. EDGE is not a debt, pays no interest and grants no claim on anyone's receivable. Staking buys a fee discount, the reward pool spends actual platform revenue, and the buyback and distribution records are public. Buying and selling the token on the open market is an ordinary exchange of property.

The open questions are the admin controls and the leveraged products. A token whose contract can be upgraded and whose supply can be expanded by an administrative decision carries uncertainty about its own future rules, and scholars screening projects weigh that. The perpetual futures section on the same platform uses leverage, funding payments and liquidation, features broadly treated as impermissible; and because most EDGE trading volume is speculation on price, the purchase itself leans toward maysir rather than use. None of this is interest based, which is why the entry is doubtful rather than prohibited.

05How to approach it

Practical takeaway: the live features are interest free and verifiable, but the contract's admin powers and the leveraged products on the platform keep the ruling open. Scholars differ. If you engage, treat it as exposure to a project you understand rather than a price bet, keep the position small, stay on the spot side and away from the leverage section, and consult a qualified scholar about your own case.

06Frequently asked questions

Is Definitive (EDGE) halal or haram?

Scholars differ (doubtful). The platform's spot execution service is permissible in itself, the token pays no interest, and its staking rewards and buybacks come from real revenue, but the contract can be upgraded and expanded by an administrative owner and the platform runs leveraged perpetual futures, so scholars differ.

Does EDGE involve riba?

No interest is paid or charged by the token, by staking or by the buybacks. Staking buys a discount on trading fees, and the reward pool is funded by platform revenue rather than lending or new issuance. Any future interest based product would need its own assessment.

Is the leveraged trading on Definitive permissible?

The perpetual futures section uses leverage, funding payments and liquidation, and scholars broadly treat leveraged futures as impermissible. It is separate from the spot trading side, so a user can stay on the spot only path, but its presence on the same platform is part of why this entry is doubtful rather than clear.
