Is Bitcoin mining halal?

Mining means contributing real computing work to validate transactions and secure a blockchain, and being rewarded with newly-issued coins plus transaction fees. Because there is genuine effort, real cost and a real service rendered to the network, many scholars view mining itself more favourably than mere speculation on price.

Why mining leans permissible

In Islamic terms, mining resembles being paid for productive work. You provide hardware, electricity and maintenance, you take on real risk and cost, and you receive a reward for a service the network genuinely needs. That is a world away from riba, since there is no loan, and from maysir, since you are not betting on a crowd. This is why the act of mining, in principle, is treated with more comfort than day-trading.

The conditions that still matter

Permissibility is not automatic. Three practical questions decide it. First, the lawfulness of the coin you mine: mining a token whose network exists mainly for gambling or interest inherits those problems. Second, the source of your capital and electricity: financing a rig with an interest-bearing loan reintroduces riba, and taking power dishonestly is its own wrong. Third, honest dealing in any pool you join.

What about the uncertain reward?

Mining income is variable, and you may earn less than you spend. That variability is normal business risk, not the forbidden gharar of an ambiguous contract, so it does not by itself make mining impermissible. It simply means, as with any venture, you should not borrow on interest to fund it.

The takeaway

Mining a permissible coin, with lawful capital and honest conduct, is viewed favourably by many scholars. Always check the underlying coin's assessment first, and consult a scholar on your specific setup. Education, not a fatwa.

This website is an educational resource, not a religious edict (fatwa). Qualified scholars differ on cryptocurrencies; the assessments here are based on widely-recognised principles of Islamic finance and are provided for learning only. Always consult a qualified scholar before making any decision, and remember that nothing here is financial advice.
